What is Literature?
Literature is mirror of Society, which express our thoughts, feelings and attitude toward life.
It is a curious and prevalent opinion that literature, like all art, is a mere play of imagination, pleasing enough, like a new novel, but without any serious or practical importance. Literature preserves the ideals of a people; and ideals – love, faith, duty, friendship, freedom, reverence -are the part of human life most worthy of preservation.
Literature is the expression of life in words of truth and beauty ; it is the written record of man’s spirit, of his thoughts, emotions, aspirations; it is the history, and the only history, of the human soul. It is characterized by its artistic, its suggestive, its permanent qualities.
The Life he literature of a people springs directly out of its life, then the stern, barbarous life of good fathers would seem, at first glance, to promise little of good literature.
First line of the idea reminds me of the book Theory Of Literature by Rene Wellek and Austin Warren, right? And play of imagination is pleasing word. Will you able to give any an example that support the idea of literature as of life in words of truth and beauty ?
